Post-Hypnotic Suggestions

Posthypnotic suggestions are given to the person, while he is in hypnosis, about behaviors and feelings he or she is to have in some future context.

Post-hypnotic suggestions make it possible for the person to carry over into the desired context the new behaviors or understandings acquired during hypnosis.

Post-hypnotic suggestions are useful when you desire someone to think, feel or act in a certain way, at some point in the future, after he comes out of hypnosis.

Without post-hypnotic suggestions, the learnings acquired during the hypnosis session will most probably be limited to the hypnotic state itself. The reason for this is that hypnotic responses are state- specific, meaning they are associated to the particular internal state.

The posthypnotic suggestion permits the newly acquired learning to cross internal boundaries and become available in other states of consciousness.

Posthypnotic suggestions are useful to assure that the desired response will become integrated into the person's everyday life, replacing unwanted responses.

Furthermore, posthypnotic suggestions can also be used to facilitate future hypnotic work by offering the suggestion that in future sessions the person can go into hypnosis more deeply and rapidly.

For example, you can say to a person:

"Every time when I tap you on the shoulder three times, you'll immediately fall into a deep state of hypnosis"

or

"Every time I make this signal (make the signal) with my hand, you'll begin to drift deeper and deeper into hypnosis."
