Learn How to Work With Elements

Before you work with the exercises on this page, make sure that you have completed all the exercises on the Develop Your Ability to Visualize page and worked with Transfer of Consciousness exercises, as well as with Conscious Breathing exercises.

The purpose of the exercises on this page is to help you greater elasticity of your energy body. They will make it easier for you to work the energy of your body whether you desire to alter your body in some way (some kids like to use their mind power to grow taller with hypnosis), for healing, for shapeshifting, as well as for many other fun things you can do with your mind and energy which I may mention later on. For now, let me also add that if it's cold, you can use your mind power to keep yourself warm by working with the element of fire, if you're hot, you can use your mind to cool yourself down with the element of water, if you feel lightheaded you can use the element of earth to make yourself grounded, if you'd like to practice levitation, you can use the element of air, though I will mention some other methods, too.

Working with the Element of Fire

For this exercise you are going to imagine that your entire universe is filled with the element of fire. The properties of the element of fire are hot and dry and it is red in color. And when I'm at it, do not do this exercise in front of your computer - it may have some undesirable consequences.

Now, you can imagine that you are becoming fire or that you are breathing in the element of fire (hot and dry) into yourself. You can experiment with red fire, white fire, violet fire and other colors and notice the difference.

You are inhaling the fire and exhaling only empty air. You should feel your body becoming hotter and hotter in the process. In the beginning you may want to work with all seven breaths. Once you have inhaled seven breaths of the element of fire and exhaled only empty air - reverse the process and imagine exhaling the element of fire and inhaling only empty air so that you feel as normal self - just as you did before the exercise.

In Tibet there is a practice called "Tumo" where an adept is able to generate enough heat not only to keep himself warm while sitting on a snowy mountain, but also to dry the wet blanket that is placed on him. The Tibetan tumo technique involves work with breathing, imagery and energy channels in the body.

Yet another purpose of working with fire is if you're having a headache, all that you have to do is imagine that your hands are on fire or that they are getting very very hot. What it will do is draw the blood from your head down into your hands, reliving the pressure in your head and getting rid of the headache almost immediately.

Working with the Element of Water

For this exercise you are going to imagine that your entire universe is filled with the element of water - as if you were immersed in an ocean of water. The properties of the element of water are cold and wet and it is blue or dark blue or even blue-green, if you prefer, in color.

Now, you can imagine that you are becoming water or that you are breathing in the element of water (cold and wet) into yourself. You are inhaling the element of water (think "ice cold") and exhaling only empty air. You should feel your body becoming colder and colder in the process. In the beginning you may want to work with all seven breaths. Once you have inhaled seven breaths of the element of water and exhaled only empty air - reverse the process and imagine exhaling the element of water and inhaling only empty air so that you feel as normal self - just as you did before the exercise.

There is yet another purpose of this imagery in hypnosis - it is to create the feeling of numbness and reduce sensitivity to pain. For this purpose you can either imagine that your hand is immersed in a bucket of ice cold water until you feel the numbness in your hand (in hypnosis, this is called "glove anesthesia") and then transfer that feeling of numbness to the part of your body that you feel pain or you can imagine that you have an ice cube on the part of your body where you are about to have some possiby painful intervention (as in when you visit a dentist, or are having blood sample taken at the doctor's office, and the nurse is about to prick your finger).

Working with the Element of Air

For this exercise you are going to imagine that your entire universe is filled with the element of air. The properties of the element of wet are hot and it is yellow in color. You may also experiment with light blue and simply transparent like the air that you breathe. It is light, light, light.

Now, you can imagine that you are becoming air, even the wind, or that you are breathing in the element of air, making you feel lighter and lighter and lighter as if you were a baloon, even becoming more and more transparent. You are inhaling the element of air and exhaling only empty air. You should feel your body becoming lighter and lighter in the process, as if you were becoming totally weightless and can float. In the beginning you may want to work with all seven breaths. Once you have inhaled seven breaths of the element of air and exhaled only empty air - reverse the process and imagine exhaling the element of air and inhaling only empty air so that you feel as normal self - just as you did before the exercise.

Working with the Element of Earth

For this exercise you are going to imagine that your entire universe is filled with the element of earth - it is dense and heavy. The properties of the element of earth are cold and dry and it is black or dark brown in color.

Now, you can imagine that you are becoming earth or that you are breathing in the element of earth (cold and dry) into yourself, becoming heavier and heavier, denser and denser. You are inhaling the element of earth (think "cool and dense" - the element of earth gives solidity, density) and exhaling only empty air. You should feel your body becoming heavier and heavier in the process. In the beginning you may want to work with all seven breaths. Once you have inhaled seven breaths of the element of earth and exhaled only empty air - reverse the process and imagine exhaling the element of earth and inhaling only empty air so that you feel as normal self - just as you did before the exercise.

Working with Spirit

Traditionally the fifth element in western esoteric tradition is called an "ether", "akasha", "universal substance", out of which the other four elements were created. For our purposes here you are going to work simply with the attributes of the Divine and as opposite to the above exercises, you do not have to reverse this process - you can keep the attribute you inhale into your being. Some of the attributes you can inhale are love, boundless power, light, infinite life (vital energy), wisdom, pure energy, infinite abundance, gratitude.

Just imagine that the entire universe is filled with the energy qualified with the particular attribute you'd like to embody - love, light, boundless power, infinite life, pure energy, infinite abundance, gratitude, etc. and then imagine that with your every breath you are absorbing particular quality until you feel that you have become it.

When you work with love, power or wisdom - I suggest that you work with all three - one after the other - in orther to maintain perfect balance in the way they express through you. They form what is called "a tripple flame".
